Edge Runtime vs Node: Where to Run Your Next.js Workloads

Edge is not faster Node — it’s a different weapon. Sub-50ms cold starts and regional execution beat a single warm server for anything read-heavy and cacheable: marketing pages, product listings, middleware auth.

Node still wins where the Edge Runtime can’t go: sharp image pipelines, heavy PDF work, long-lived sockets, and native modules. Our decision tree: static-ish and personalizable → edge; stateful, binary, or long-running → Node serverless.

We run hybrid by default — middleware + ISR pages on the edge, checkout webhooks and queues on Node. One repo, two runtimes, zero drama. Measure p95 by region before you pick a side.
